Happy 4th of July!

My group of friends packed a picnic with a cooler full of drinks and set out for the beach. We were harassed by the police, so we retreated to my community garden plot. We ate and drank and chatted for hours. As the sun set, we walked down to Seabright Beach and watched people who defied the police set off a stunning fireworks display. When the police started rounding us up to send us home, a group of fireworks inciters started singing The Star Spangled Banner. It spontaneously caught up along the other beach goers. It was a beautiful evening. We eventually settled back into the quiet of my house with beer and our small personal collection of explosives.

The Baby Swallows under the Bridge

So Arthur and I were walking along the levee on our way to dinner tonight, and underneath the Laurel Street Bridge, just as the sun was setting there were swarms of swallows. There were about a hundred swallow nests, in sets of 6-10 along the bottom edge of the bridge over the San Lorenzo River. The adult swallows were swooping in and out feeding their babies which were sticking little mouths out from the nests and crying for food. We see the same birds under the bridge every year, it’s become an annual landmark.

Okay, so to get why this is funny you have to first go to:  http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html
This cartoon it totally derivative of Allie's work, but it was sooo funny, I couldn't resist. But seriously, the joke is hers.

Secondly, you have to know that my husband, Arthur, is a computer programmer and spends most of his day staring blankly at a computer monitor, being bored and frustrated and trying to fix computers (hopefully faster than new things break).
